ABS and the Major Atom OBA Girls' Teams

This past weekend the ABS was proud to role out the Major Atom Girls' Division! This comes directly on the heels of the previous weekend where two other Girls' divisions were introduced. While last season included Major Bantam and Midget Girls' teams (2 divisions) this season will include 5 divisions of play (Major Atom U12 to Major Midget U16) and all divisions play under the OBA rules and governance.

While taking in action at both Turner Fenton High Schools we saw some incredible team basketball which was both competitive and entertaining.  On top of this, the atmosphere was unbelievably respectful with players celebrating after the games with their opponents, win or lose!

One of the first games saw IEM Newmarket taking on the Welland Warriors. IEM was running some very effective offensive sets that got them into scoring positions while Welland was passing and cutting effectively.  This game could have went either way and came down to a few free throws and rebounds.  Welland ended up taking it by two points 39-37.  Not unnoticed was the play by two players in this game: #5 Kiara from Welland and #14 Isaline.  Both were defensively strong. Offensively they were next to impossible to stop. Isaline got to the line at will and poured in 10 points in less than 3 shifts!  Her height and athleticism were hard to match.  Kiara also went off scoring 17 points on 3 shifts and at one point was perfect from the line.  This game was one of the best on the day!

Pelham versus Etobicoke also showed us that the talent on the girls' side is second to none. While Etobicoke led for most of the game, Pelham never stopped working and proved that heart means everything.  Both teams displayed some great play making and amongst the team efforts #8 Alissa and #9 Fallon displayed excellence at both ends of the court.  Alissa's ball handling and court awareness was amazing to watch and Fallon was a huge strength defensively.  On the other side, #2 Lauren R and #10 Rosaleen from Etobicoke proved they can score with anyone.

With all this being said, the game of the day was definitely Caledon Cougars versus St. Catharine's CYO Rebels.  This game became a defensive match up that ended up going into double overtime.  There were chances on both sides to win it but the ball wouldn't drop! The game was close from the half onwards with the lead changing hands several times.

Both teams were doing all they could to stay in the game.  #12 Allison (St. Catharine's) knocked down two consecutive free throws to narrow the lead to 4.  Allison also lead the charge by scoring 14 points in her first three shifts.

Going into the 7th shift it was a 3 point game and with 6:35 remaining #14 Sydney from St. Catharine's hit a high arching bank shot to take the lead by one. Caledon had a very balanced scoring attack and in the 7th shift #11 Ailen hit one of two free throws to shed the deficit to 1. #10 Logan (St. Cat's) was all over the court and #10 Carly (Caledon) hit a huge bucket with 1:50 left to tie the game. Of note in overtime, #23 Alina (Caledon) hit one of two from the stripe to tie the game with 42 seconds left.  The game was decided in double OT with Caledon taking it by one!
